Russian is a fairly popular language and many people travel there for whatever reason. Most don’t need a full college course on Russian to make due for a trip or a vacation. In those cases, a multilingual dictionary or a phrasebook should do just fine. You don’t need a paper book anymore. Your mobile phone can do the job and then some. Here are the best Russian to English dictionaries and phrasebooks for Android!
Dict.cc is a popular and powerful multilingual dictionary. It works with about a dozen languages and Russian is one of them. The app features a large database of words for all of its supported languages. Additionally, it comes with a clean UI, offline support, basic definitions, and more. It’s mainly a German to English dictionary. However, all of the languages work with at least German and English. This one is above average for multilingual dictionaries.
Dictionary Linguee is one of the best multilingual dictionaries out there. It supports over four dozen languages and they all work with one another. One of those is Russian, of course. The app features a very clean and modern user interface, offline support, translations, definitions, pronunciations, example sentences, and full offline support. It’s also free as far as we can tell and it has a website for cross-platform support. It’s not perfect, but it’s close, especially for its price.
Google Play Books and similar apps are excellent for phrasebooks and dictionaries. You can buy them digitally and they’re basically the same as the paperback versions. These don’t get destroyed if your mouthwash explodes in your suitcase, though. Most phrasebooks and multilingual dictionaries cost less than $10 on most platforms. Plus, these apps usually feature cross-device syncing, offline downloads, and clean user interfaces. It’s a good app to do the old school method in a new school way.
Google Translate is probably your best option for Russian to English dictionaries or phrasebooks. It translates over 100 languages offline and over 50 offline (typing only). Additionally, it uses your camera to translate things like road signs or restaurant menus and it has a two-way conversation feature that translates between two speakers. This is basically perfect for trips or vacations. The translations are usually pretty accurate. However, you can suggest changes on the browser version if you need to. Plus, it’s entirely free. This is the one we’d recommend first.
Reverso Translation Dictionary is an above average Russian to English dictionary. It supports multiple languages as well. The app features include definitions, translations, sentence examples, quick reverse translations, suggestions, search history, and offline support. There are also flashcards for memorization and practice. The UI could be easier, but it is clean and modern. Additionally, online support is a tad spotty from time to time. However, it’s still a decent multilingual dictionary. We also recommend Simply Learn Russian as a decent phrasebook to pair with this one.
Sometimes it’s better to just go and learn the language. Frequent travelers to the region may want to invest in this idea. Most Russian learning apps include a dictionary, translations, phrasebooks, and similar tools. Their prices vary and the apps are much larger. However, you can get all the tools you need in one of these software suites. Some popular options include Memrise, Duolingo, and Mondly. Their feature sets and UI differ fairly greatly, but they all teach you Russian and have tools for helping you remember it.
