The API has been in developer preview, and is now available. Developers across the board can access and utilize the API. But, Google has created a Google Photos partner program for larger integrations. Use case scenarios include helping people find photos based on photo/video content, date taken, media format, as well album organization and sharing.

The API functions includes three categories: upload, connect, and share. Upload features allows users to transfer photos, save to storage and add context to photos or albums. Connect features allow users to integrate photos/videos into apps, organize content, and sync photos/videos with new content. Share features allow users to increase engagement and share photos/videos with others.
